The Twin Cities IEEE Engineering Management Society invites you to attend a presentation:

Seminar
"Gnarly Problems Managing Software Development, or why it isn't enough to know the PMBOK..."

By:  Kurt Papke, Veritas Software

Thursday, February 24, 2005 6:00pm to 8:30pm

Hosted by:  J. Gordon Electronic Design, Minneapolis, MN

Agenda:
6:00 to 7:00 Refreshments, networking
7:00 to 8:00 Main presentation
8:00 to 8:30 Questions and networking.

About the Speaker:
Kurt Papke is a software development manager at VERITAS (soon to be Symantec).
He has managed software people and projects in many different industries in the
Twin Cities in the last 28 years including manufacturing automation at 3M,
grain elevator automation, computer graphics at Dicomed, and two medical
device companies: Sanofi Diagnostics (now called Beckman-Coulter) and Angeion.

In addition to his industrial experience Kurt has been on the adjunct
faculty in the Graduate Programs in Software at the University of St.
Thomas for the last 4+ years where he has been teaching Software
Project/Process management to Master's degree students. Teaching
by night and practicing by day he sees both the theory and actual
practice of how software projects do (and don't...) work.

About the Topic:
Software development projects are notorious for being late, over-budget,
buggy and de-scoped. Things haven't really improved as much as hoped in
the last 40 years. Why is that? What are the latest techniques to improve
the situation, what problems will they solve and what problems will they
create? One of the latest trends is towards increased emphasis on PMI
certification for project managers, will this finally be the Silver
Bullet we've been waiting for?

Location:
The meeting will be held at the offices of J. Gordon Electronic Design at 500 73rd Avenue NE, Suite 105, Minneapolis, MN.
