Meetings/Events

The Twin Cities IEEE Engineering Management Society invites you to attend a presentation:

"A talk on the subject of Technology Management from a Systems Engineers
Perspective"

John Palmer of the INCOSE North Star Chapter

Thursday, Sept 29, 2005 6:00pm to 8:30pm

Hosted by:
General Dynamics

Agenda:
6:00 to 7:00 Refreshments, networking
7:00 to 8:00 Main presentation
8:00 to 8:30 Questions and networking.

About the Topic:
John will cover the broad subject, Management of Technology.  However, his main emphasis will be on understanding the role of requirements in the development process. This will start with the means for arriving at an initial understanding of a customer or company development need, followed by the processes for conversion of this need into a detailed set of specific requirements, monitoring and updating them as the design proceeds and testing them to insure that the real need is actually met to the satisfaction of all concerned.  He will draw upon a large store of experience, both positive and negative, to illustrate the necessity for and value of this critical aspect of the overall Systems Engineering process in successfully managing the development of technical systems.

About the Speaker:
John Palmer received his BS in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati where, as a coop student, he had four years experience in many aspects of  aircraft design and test with Chance Vought Aircraft by the time he graduated. He entered the Air Force to fulfill his active duty requirement for the ROTC but enjoyed it so much he spent the next 30 years at it in every aspect of aircraft operation from maintenance to management of design and development programs.  He also received his MS in Nuclear Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology.  By the time he retired he had a broad background in the development of complex systems and started a second career with the defense industry, working for 15 years as a systems engineer in the development of new systems with Honeywell, Alliant Techsystems and United Defense.  He is now "retired" but teaching courses in systems engineering for the University of Minnesota as an adjunct professor. He has a great deal of experience, not only in how to develop systems but in how not to develop them.

Location:
The meeting  will be hosted by General Dynamics at 8800 Queen Avenue South, Bloomington. at Please come to the front desk. Note that as General Dynamics is a defense contractor, they will need advance notice if you are not a US citizen. A government issued picture ID will be required.

Cost:
Free for EMS members and non-members attending for the first time; $10 otherwise. Refreshments will be provided.

Registration:
Please pre-register, if possible, before noon on Sep 26th (so we know how much food to bring) by using the online registration form at: http://www.tc-ieee-ems.org/meetingregistration.htm
