| The Twin Cities IEEE Engineering
Management Society Invites You to Attend:
Do Birds of a Feather Flock Together?
John W. Center
Tuesday, November 27, 2001
6:30 pm until 8:00pm
Dunwoody Institute, Room 41
818 Dunwoody Boulevard
Minneapolis, MN.
About the Meeting:
The old wisdom says, "Birds of a feather flock together." Is
that true? What if those birds fill positions and roles in technology and
engineering organizations? What if the key is the feather?
This presentation will consider what feathers are necessary to be
successful in the areas of research, development engineering,
manufacturing-process engineering, and continuation-support engineering.
Then we will look at the birds that will need to have those feathers. With
that information fully in hand, the nature of the flock will be
considered. Come prepared to learn some important things about bird
watching and bird identification.
Those attending this presentation will learn how the organization areas
of research, development engineering, manufacturing-process engineering,
and continuation-support engineering really are different. They will learn
about the challenges associated with providing leadership to this actually
very diverse group. They will learn why there may be difficulties when one
tries to provide leadership in a homogeneous and consistent manner. Once
the differences, difficulties, and challenges are recognized, we will look
at the processes of creativity, innovation, and puzzle solving. We will
learn how the differences in those processes provide a key for leading and
managing the people in those different organization areas.

teaches courses in strategic management, technology management and
business policy. In his spare(?) time, he shares his energy with the Boy
Scouts where he and his Troop have earned many awards and distinctions. He
has a BS in Physics with a minor in Economics, an MS in Systems
Engineering, and an MBA. His professional credentials include a
Professional Engineer (PE) license from California in quality engineering.
